Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by bacteria. It is passed to another person through unprotected vaginal sex, oral sex and anal sex. If you had chlamydia in the past and are now trying to get pregnant, then you should be concerned. While most people think that everything goes back to normal after getting an STD treatment, chlamydia is one of those diseases that must be treated as soon as possible. If not, it can cause inflammation in your pelvis and make it hard to get pregnant.

Cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Scarring of your fallopian tubes is a problem when you are trying to conceive. It is one of the complications of contracting chlamydia. When left untreated, chlamydia can cause scar tissue to form in your pelvic area.

This scar tissue blocks your fallopian tubes by binding them down. This results in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID happens when bacteria get in your cervix and spreads to your reproductive organs. Symptoms for this disease include painful sex, backaches, fever and lower abdominal pain.

Once the infection spreads, it can cause irreparable damage to your fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus and reproductive system. Over one million women in United States are diagnosed with PID. As a result of this condition, over 100,000 women become infertile each year. The initial treatment for PID is antibiotic medications, which can be taken by mouth.

Prevent Your Eggs From Reaching Your Uterus

Chlamydia is an infection and it can spread. It can prevent you from getting pregnant when the disease spreads to your fallopian tubes and uterus. Your fallopian tubes carry your fertilized eggs from your ovaries to the uterus. When the inside of your fallopian tubes are infected with infection, it prevents your eggs from moving down to your uterus.

Complications During Pregnancy

Some women may not find out they have chlamydia until after getting pregnant. Unfortunately, you can then pass this disease to your unborn baby.  Pregnant women who go untreated are at a greater risk of developing complications. The pregnancy could result in stillbirth, premature birth or miscarriage.

If you have been trying to get pregnant, then you should go to a doctor, such as those at Advanced Urology Associates, for an examination. There could be a reason for you not getting pregnant. Chlamydia becomes a problem when left untreated. It can create havoc in your body when the disease is allowed to just sit. Infertility is one of the side effects of not getting treatment.
